Talking about Security and Privacy for young people

Why?
#

The Cyber Threat is real, but existing information and training is boring and, often, very dated.

I (Martin) try to make these sessions fun and interesting, and will happily spice it up with a little stunt hacking and bad puns, ensuring that it is brought down to a level where everybody can participate and learn from it, and hopefully have a laugh or two.

What?
#

The boring, but mandatory, highlights of what a session like this may include;

Introduction
#

  • Background information on cyber security and privacy.
  • Stories and experiences from the people in the room.
  • A bit of Stunt Hacking or demoing hacking gadgets.

A sad tale of Identity Theft
#

  • Too many have experienced Identity Theft, some of them will be discussed and related to during the session, hopefully relating to the stories and experiences shared.

Cyber Threats
#

Common types of cyber attacks and their impacts, such as phishing, malware, ransomware, identity theft, etc. - There will be real-life examples!

Cyber Hygiene
#

Explain the best practices and habits to protect oneself and one’s data online, such as using strong passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication, updating software, avoiding suspicious links or attachments, etc. Provide tips and resources to help improve cyber hygiene.

Cyber Rights
#

Discuss the ethical and legal aspects of cyber security and privacy, such as data protection laws, consent, digital citizenship, online safety, etc. Highlight the rights and responsibilities of students as online users and consumers. (But funnier - or as funny as it can be.)

Cyber Careers
#

Introduce the various career opportunities and pathways in the field of cyber security, such as security analyst, penetration tester, forensic investigator, etc. Explain the skills and qualifications required for these roles, and the benefits and challenges of working in cyber security.

Feedback
#

Hopefully the session becomes more of a forth and back continually providing feedback, but please do provide feedback also after the session. Thanks!

Dad jokes
#

The session will be containing silly Dad Jokes, but I try not to be offensive.

Rules
#

What happens in class stays in class! That should be true for everybody in the room, so I usually start by asking if anyone disagrees with that.

How?
#

Contact me via e-mail and I will get back to you.
